February 2010 Editor’s Note by Mary DiAngelo

How can we feasibly handle all of the excitement that February has thrown our way? We have Birthday Ball (to celebrate the birth of our humble college’s honorable namesake), Valentine’s Day, and an impromptu snow break all in one month! It is difficult to conceive that we have yet to face the brunt of this semester, or that this semester also contains that distant concept called spring. It seems that our semesters are constructed to avoid the mention of winter. We call them “fall semester” and “spring semester” with these lovely transitional seasons in mind. We like to think of mild weather and dying or blooming vegetation. Meanwhile, we are in the midst of this so-called spring semester, barricaded into our rooms by snow, going stir crazy and debating whether or not it is appropriate to show up to Birthday Ball in snow boots. No? Maybe that is just me. To fulfill your need for creative student expression, the February issue of the Collegian is filled with holiday survival stories, projects hatched before or over break, and of course the constant supply of random musings. I hope that you enjoy this first issue of our lovely “spring” semester.
